So You Want To Record To Tape…

Studer A80 MKIV 24 track 2” tape

Recording straight to tape allows for a great analog sound, but the workflow for recording and punching edits, and the cost of tape are important considerations before you move forward with an analog session. We purchase tape from ATR Magnetics, and the price for a 2500’ reel (16 min @ 30ips or 32 min @ 15ips) currently sells for $375 + shipping, which is added to the cost of your session. Our recommendation is to consider tape sessions using a hybrid option, where you are capturing drums and bass through tape and then transferring to digital for overdubs. This method often leads to less frustration and a more efficient process for multiple takes and options for creative editing.
